Medical Science Liaison II - Oncology Diagnostics (Southwest Territory)

Your tasks and responsibilities


The primary responsibilities of this role, Medical Science Liaison – Oncology Diagnostics (Dx MSL), are to: 


  • Serves as technical and scientific support in the field for healthcare providers ensuring safe and effective use of Bayer products including timely adverse event reporting and responses to unsolicited requests for detailed product and disease state information;
  • The Dx MSL also develops a complete understanding of national and regional experts in specific therapeutic categories and the healthcare environment in which they work;
  • The Dx MSL will collaborate with internal business partners as an expert consultant to meet specific scientific needs of internal and external contacts within specific therapeutic and geographic areas.
  • Will deliver clinical, scientific, and technical education, building long term peer to peer relationships with key stakeholders and establishing rapport by providing scientific education to laboratory directors, pathology and medical oncology HCPs on the role of diagnostic testing for TRK-fusion protein biomarkers and the role this testing plays in relation to targeted oncology agents;
  • Responsible for developing, coordinating and assuring implementation scientific and clinical strategies to these thought leaders within academic, clinical, and healthcare organizations. These scientific exchanges will support and/or expand current companion diagnostic concepts, as well as ensure the safe and effective utilization of product(s);
  • Provides in depth scientific education on the clinical utility of oncology diagnostic testing and the various technologies/ platforms available for TRK testing;
  • Provides medical support for expanding lab testing capabilities and set up testing protocols;
  • Supports acquisition/ implementation of new technologies (through medical grant evaluations, etc.);
  • Coordinates between client and partner accounts and medical/ technical colleagues at 3rd party labs;
  • Liaises with Product MSL to support IIR/ ISTs specific to testing/diagnostics;
  • Drives awareness and education around NTRK testing in the pathology community;
  • Maximizes and leverages thought leader relationships by identifying mutually beneficial opportunities that meet the strategic needs of internal stakeholders;
  • Supports medical strategies for Company compounds and responds to unsolicited requests for medical information from HCPs and laboratories;
  • Develops and maintains strong collaborative relationships with external experts vital to product development;
  • Participates in and contributes to projects and initiatives that increase the value and productivity of Medical Affairs;
  • Enhances scientific knowledge of external stakeholders through education and appropriate scientific exchange (clinical presentations at office visits, medical meetings, and other venues as needed);
  • Timely, accurate, specific and balanced responses to professional requests for information (PIR) in collaboration with Medical Communications;
  • Adherence to SOP and FDA guidance for distribution of scientific information;
  • Adherence to SOP and compliance guidelines for all external contacts;
  • Attends appropriate scientific meetings and remains current of new and emerging scientific information and treatment options in relevant therapeutic areas/tumor types;
  • Collaborates across functions to ensure achievement of key goals;
  • Regularly collects and interprets medical insights and intelligence gathered from scientific exchange with thought leaders and communicates relevant information to internal stakeholders in order to define, update, and support medical strategies (i.e., Competitive Intelligence);
  • Actively participates in and contributes to Medical Affairs or cross-functional projects/initiatives;
  • Provides medical support, clinical input, and/or training to internal teams as requested;
  • Coordinates and collaborates with strategic alliance partners regarding opinion leader involvement and interaction planning;
  •  Complete, timely and accurate documentation of interactions and contacts within appropriate databases;
  • Administrative reports, such as expense reports and status reports completed in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications:


  • BA/ BS Degree required;
  • 2+ years of combined clinical, research, academic or PhRMA (MSL, Medical Affairs, clinical development) experience required;
  • Highly knowledgeable regarding the science and practice of various testing platforms use within oncology tumor profiling (i.e., NGS, IHC,FISH, PCR);
  • Strong established relationships with in-house (e.g., academic medical center) and/or send-out national/specialty reference lab key opinion leaders, preferred;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, team, written and verbal communication skills. Excellent project management ability
  • Well-versed in highly technical and scientific languages in order to communicate with key Thought Leaders, Medical Affairs, Research and Development, as well as other key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of FDA, OIG requirements;
  • Proven track record of teamwork, leadership, timely decision making and results orientation in meeting objectives;
  • Computer literacy and the ability to learn essential software programs;
  • Willingness to travel (up to 75% 8-10 over nights per month) within the territory;
  • Potential occasional travel outside territory for training, conferences, etc.;
  • Ability to critically evaluate the medical literature.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Advanced clinical/science degree in PhD, DO, MD or Pharm. D. preferred;
  • Post-doctoral residency/fellowship training;
  • Previous experience with oncology diagnostics preferred
  • Didactic teaching experience (i.e., lectures on related topics presented at university type setting);
  • Demonstrated expertise in the drug discovery and drug development process;
  • Established track record in basic or clinical research.
