Senior Director Therapeutic Modalities 1
In Bayer’s Pharmaceuticals division, we focus on researching, developing, and marketing specialty-focused innovative medicines that provide significant clinical benefit and value, primarily in the therapeutic areas of cardiology, oncology, gynecology, hematology, and ophthalmology. YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role, Sr Dir Therapeutic Modalities 1 are to:
- Independent leadership role in a group of interdisciplinary project teams with strategic, complex tasks;
- Contribute, coordinate and/or lead interdisciplinary drug discovery projects from project conception at various stages from first idea to Development Candidate
- Share responsibility for project- and development candidate goals throughout the discovery process with focus on technical aspects;
- Define project plans for projects, including externally carried out projects or project modules with a focus on technical aspects;
- Coordinate interdisciplinary drug discovery projects conducted fully or in part externally, including strategic collaboration partners or Bayer affiliates such as Vividion;
- Transport project needs into the Bayer R&D organization and report project progress to Bayer governance bodies;
- Set up plans and monitor progress to identify active compounds for the development of new active ingredients and innovative molecules with high economic potential;
- Set up plans and monitor generation of lead structures from various sources, including for example, proteomics screens, uHTS, structure-driven approaches or as follow-up to existing projects;
- Facilitate scientific discussions between different disciplines at Bayer R&D, Bayer affiliates and external organizations;
- Lead medicinal chemistry teams and contribution to design ideation;
- Coordinate and guide of the modality strategy in multiple projects, and external medicinal chemistry resources;
- Ensure to generate and secure IP for all projects, high safety standards and compliance;
- Build interface and cooperate with external party and other research and development units Bayer-internally for all aspects of compound and candidate characterization and information exchange;
- Ensure efficient data transfer from Bayer to external partner and vice versa;
- Manage resources efficiently;
- Oversee Logistics support at BRIC/TMUS.
WHO YOU ARE

Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Chemistry/Organic Chemistry or related area with at least 8 years of experience in Medicinal Chemistry or comparable experience in other synthetic modality;
- Research experience in organic chemistry and/or comparable other disciplines;
- Knowledge of classical and modern synthetic methods, modern tools in chemical research;
- Drug discovery and/or development expertise, including demonstrated ability to manage projects and work in a multidisciplinary context and to develop and work in a partnership with external scientists (academia and industry);
- Experience as part of a project team and demonstrated success with significant contributions to major milestones of project by applying a broad range of scientific/technical principles;
- Experience as Chemistry Coordinator or Project Leader of interdisciplinary R&D projects and supervising employees in a scientific setting;
- Significant contribution to the development of novel project proposals or technologies and patent applications or proprietary technologies, when possible;
- Design, execute, analyze and interpret experiments, systems, methods development, validation, scale-up or operations which leads to significant impact on a project or the strategic direction of the department;
- Scientific/technical leadership abilities through major contributions to new or advanced technologies and/or new concept research areas;
- Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought;
- Present ongoing scientific/technical work at internal/departmental seminars;
- Ability to build relationships through inter-organization collaborations;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including writing of scientific and technical reports and presentations;
- Leadership of cross functional teams from early drug discovery to lead candidate development stage;
- Communication skills;
- Intercultural skills and team orientation;
- Fluency in English;
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft suite of Software (Word, Excel) and relevant software for research project related work.
